ST. LOUIS (AP) - One of the no-name players the St. Louis Blues called up to replace the top two scorers they traded helped them get over another depressing day for the franchise.

Rookie Lee Stempniak, summoned from Peoria of the AHL on Sunday, scored the tying goal and then got the winner in the fifth round of a shootout for a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Monday night.

"Everyone wants to be a clutch player and I was happy to be out there, but I was a little bit nervous," Stempniak said. "I'd been 0-for-the-shootout so far in Peoria and I was just happy it went in."

Stempniak scored the tying goal in the second period for the Blues, who won for only the second time in 13 games. St. Louis had been 1-5 in shootouts, three of the losses coming in the previous four games.

The depleted Blues won the shootout 3-2 against the Northwest Division-leading Flames just a few hours they shipped leading scorer Doug Weight to Carolina for a first-round pick and prospects. It was the second trade in 24 hours for the Blues, who traded No. 2 scorer Mike Sillinger to Nashville on Sunday.

The trades were made to streamline the team, last overall in the NHL, for a sale.

"This morning it was a pretty somber room," coach Mike Kitchen said. "We addressed that before the game. I thought it was a real gutsy effort by everyone on the club."

Jay McClement and Dennis Wideman also scored in the shootout for the Blues, and like Stempniak they beat Miikka Kiprusoff with high efforts.

"They beat me a couple of times glove high, so you have to learn from that and be ready for the next shootout that comes for us," Kiprusoff said. "With two goals you should always win."

Tony Amonte and Matthew Lombardi scored in the shootout for the Flames, who outshot St. Louis 31-18 in the regulation and overtime.

The Flames finished a trip 2-3 after winning 5-3 at Chicago on Sunday. Forward Shean Donovan wasn't surprised that the Blues played an inspired game.

"I think we knew they had a lot of young guys and they would come out flying and work hard and that's what they did," Donovan said. "We know when that happens sometimes the guys play pretty hard and tonight St. Louis played hard."

McClement, also called up in the wake of the Weight and Sillinger trades, also scored in regulation for the Blues. Daymond Langkow and Marcus Nilson scored in regulation for the Flames,

After a scoreless first period, the teams combined for only 13 shots but four goals in the second. Calgary scored on its first two shots, the Blues on two of their first three.

A giveaway by defenseman Barret Jackman behind the Blues' net led to the game's first goal, by Langkow off a setup from Amonte at 1:20. The Flames made it 2-0 when Nilson scored his sixth goal from the slot only 27 seconds into a power play.

McClement broke in alone and beat Kiprusoff to the stick side at 7:43, and Stempniak scored from the slot at 16:47 off an effective screen in front of the net by Petr Cajanek.

Notes: Earlier Monday, the Blues placed defenseman Bryce Salvador (shoulder) on injured reserve. The team lost another D when Kevin Dallman left with a sore left hand in the second period. ... Injured Blues forward Keith Tkachuk (broken hand) has practiced the last two days and could return to the lineup this week. "It's not where I want it to be right now," Tkachuk said Monday after the morning skate. "It's not right." ... Flames D Roman Hamrlik cut his hand Sunday night and was sent back to Calgary to have the injury examined.
