Backed by Porter goal, Elliott blanks Red Wings

Dan Rosen  - NHL.com Senior Writer | Sunday, 04.07.2013 / 3:13 PM

DETROIT -- Brian Elliott has found his game again, and the St. Louis Blues are climbing up the Western Conference standings.

Elliott made 28 saves Sunday to pick up his first shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena. It's the Blues' first shutout of the Red Wings in Detroit since Dec. 9, 2009.

Elliott had nine shutouts last season, but none in his four appearances against the Red Wings.

Chris Porter's second-period goal was all the Blues needed to win their fourth in a row since a three-game losing streak. St. Louis has killed off 18 straight power plays dating back to seven games ago.

With the win, the Blues leapt the Red Wings and, depending on the outcome of the game between the Minnesota Wild and Columbus Blue Jackets later Sunday, they could finish the day sixth in the Western Conference.

The Blues will at least be as high as seventh.

Elliott, who was sent to Peoria of the American Hockey League on a conditioning assignment late last month, has won all three of his decisions since returning to St. Louis and has allowed only four goals in his past 165 minutes of action.

Blues rookie goalie Jake Allen also had a 26-save win against the Blue Jackets this past Friday.

Detroit drops to eighth in the Western Conference but maintains a three-point lead over the ninth-place Phoenix Coyotes. The Red Wings have won only two of their past six games, both against the last-place Colorado Avalanche.

St. Louis won despite playing without both T.J. Oshie and Andy McDonald. McDonald was scratched because of the flu and Oshie, who is on the road trip with the Blues, remains on injured reserve with a lower-body injury believed to be a bruised foot.

The Blues grabbed a 1-0 lead late in the second period on Porter's second goal of the season. St. Louis kept the lead going into the second intermission, but the Red Wings had 76 seconds of power-play time carry over into the third period thanks to David Backes' tripping penalty deep in the offensive zone.

Detroit did nothing with it. The Blues' penalty kill was 3-for-3 Sunday.

The Blues also couldn't get anything going on the power play, but the Red Wings' comeback chances were burned with 2:08 remaining, when Niklas Kronwall was called for a delay of game after he closed his hand on the puck.

Porter scored the game's lone goal by finding the puck at his feet in the slot and poking it underneath Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard with 3:32 left before the second intermission.

He came in off the rush and originally tried to pass the puck to his right, but it hit off Patrik Berglund's skates and directed toward the net. The puck skipped around and Howard lost it in the crease, but Porter somehow found it amid all the bodies around the crease.

The Wings had a chance to score first less than five minutes earlier when Gustav Nyquist was sprung for a breakaway after Jordan Leopold turned the puck over in the neutral zone. However, Elliott stoned Nyquist with a right elbow save to preserve the scoreless tie with eight minutes left in the second period.

Detroit got a power-play opportunity just 22 seconds later when Berglund was called for interference on Justin Abdelkader, but the Red Wings didn't even get a shot on goal during the two-minute man-advantage and just over two minutes later Porter gave St. Louis the lead.
