STOCKHOLM -- It was considered a Detroit home game here at the Ericsson Globe and the Swede-heavy Red Wings had the sellout crowd on its side throughout the late-starting first game of the 2009 Compuware NHL Premiere-Stockholm.

Too bad the St. Louis Blues spoiled the party.

The Blues got a jump on everybody in the Central Division by scoring three unanswered goals in a 5:05 span late in the second period to rally for a 4-3 victory on Friday. Paul Kariya scored twice and B.J. Crombeen had the other goal as the Blues took advantage of some defensive lapses by the Red Wings and shaky goaltending from Chris Osgood.

St. Louis still needed to kill off a Detroit power play halfway through the third period and goalie Chris Mason had to come up with a masterful save on Johan Franzen's one-timer 5:30 into the final period to preserve the lead.

For a while it was looking like a Wings' rout -- Detroit appeared to be on cruise control with a 3-1 lead midway through the game. But the Blues found holes in Osgood and Detroit's defense and wound up tying the game on Crombeen's goal 14:39 into the second period, then took lead on Kariya's second goal of the game just under three minutes later.

Kariya had gotten the Blues back into the game with a power play goal at 12:31, beating Osgood on the stick side with a low wrist shot from near the left circle.

Just over two minutes later, Osgood left a rebound in front of the net after stopping Jay McClement's shot, but nobody blocked out Crombeen, who swooped into the slot and cashed in to make it 3-3.

Kariya put the Blues ahead to stay by collecting a loose puck near the Wings' blue line, breaking in alone and beating Osgood with a wrist shot at 17:36.

Ville Leino had given the Wings a 3-1 lead with a power-play goal at the end of Alex Steen's double-minor penalty early in the period. Leino ripped a powerful snap shot from inside the right circle that Mason would have been lucky to stop.

Kirk Maltby gave the Wings a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes by scoring a shorthanded, breakaway goal at 14:01 after stealing the puck from Blues defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo at the right point. Franzen was in the penalty box at the time for tripping.

It could have been worse for the Blues, but they managed to kill off a 5-on-3 for 1:36 at the end of the first period to keep the deficit at just one goal.

McClement gave the Blues a 1-0 lead 7:54 into the game, Swedish defenseman Jonathan Ericsson, who left the game with an undisclosed injury in the second period, scored the equalizer for Detroit at 10:42.
