Schmaltz was the Blues' first round pick (25th overall). The 18-year-old split last season between the USHL's Green Bay Gamblers and Sioux City Musketeers, ranking second among USHL defenseman with 41 points (10 goals, 31 assists) in 55 games. A native of Madison, Wisconsin, Schmaltz is the first player since the 1994-95 season to be named to the All-USHL First Team in consecutive seasons. He will attend the University of North Dakota in the fall.
Kurker was selected in the second round (56th overall). The 18-year-old played in 24 games last season with St. John's Prep in Massachussetts, recording 60 points (32 goals and 28 assists) along with 23 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-2, 198-pound Kurker describes himself as a power forward and was ranked 36th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting. He is committed to play for Boston University.
