Larry Pleau

Larry PleauLarry Pleau became a Vice President/Senior Adviser with the Blues in July of 2010 after serving 13 years as the club’s General Manager, the longest tenure in franchise history.

During Pleau's tenure (1997-2010) as General Manager, he successfully re-established the organization's talent basis, while steering the team towards challenging for the Stanley Cup. The Blues posted a 468-396-120 record during his 13 years while capturing the Presidents' Trophy during the 1999-2000 campaign. The team also posted a 260-153-63-16 record from 1997-1998 to 2002-2003, marking the best six-year span in franchise history. Pleau served as the Assistant General Manager of silver medal-winning Team USA at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and was named General Manager for Team USA for the 2003 and 2004 (bronze medal) IIHF World Championships and at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was named The Sporting News "Executive of the Year" following the Blues success in 1999-2000, when the team posted a 51-20-11 record and in 2000 was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.
After Pleau arrived in St. Louis, the team acquired players through trades such as Keith Tkachuk, Brad Boyes, Doug Weight, Scott Mellanby, Dallas Drake and Andy McDonald. Pleau also has been involved in each of the Blues’ drafts and under his watch the team has drafted Barret Jackman, Jay McClement, Erik Johnson, Roman Polak, David Perron, David Backes, T.J. Oshie, Patrik Berglund and Alex Pietrangelo.

Pleau began conducting summer player mini-camps for the organization's top prospects during his time as General Manager. His fan/media-friendly approach has gained him respect around the league as one of the most aggressive-thinking general managers in hockey today.

Pleau spent eight seasons with the New York Rangers organization prior to his arrival in St. Louis as Assistant General Manager and Vice President of Player Personnel. He joined the Rangers in 1989 as Assistant General Manager of Player Development. During Pleau's tenure in New York, he worked along side General Manager Neil Smith to help steer the Rangers to the 1994 Stanley Cup. While with the Rangers, Pleau was responsible for drafting such players as Doug Weight, Tony Amonte, Sergei Zubov, Alexei Kovalev, Todd Marchant and Mattias Norstrom.

Prior to joining the Rangers, Pleau spent 17 seasons with the Hartford Whalers organization in various capacities; as a player, Assistant coach, Head Coach, General Manager, minor league General Manager and minor league Head Coach. He played in three World Hockey Association (WHA) All-Star Games during his playing career in Hartford. As Whalers General Manager, Pleau was instrumental in drafting Ray Ferraro, Ron Francis, Kevin Dineen and Ulf Samuelsson.

Pleau played three seasons with the Montreal Canadiens (1969-1972), winning the Stanley Cup in 1971 and an Avco World Cup in 1972. He was the first player signed by the Hartford Whalers of the WHA. Pleau played center/left wing for the Whalers from 1972 until his retirement in 1979 and appeared in 468 regular season games for Hartford, amassing 157 goals and 215 assists for 372 points. He also competed nationally for the 1968 United States Olympic Team, the 1969 U.S. National Team and for Team USA in the 1976 Canada Cup Tournament.

Pleau and his wife, Wendy, have two children: son, Steve, and daughter, Shannon; and five grandchildren, granddaughters, Lily, Reese and Gracie and grandsons, Ryan and Jake.
