John Davidson

John Davidson became the seventh president in franchise history on June 30, 2006. Since his arrival, the organization has signed players such as Paul Kariya and Keith Tkachuk while continuing to develop a solid young team. Davidson has also made deals which has brought Brad Boyes, Chris Mason and Andy McDonald to St. Louis.
Davidson, a former goaltender for the Blues and the team’s first-round draft choice in 1973, boasts an impressive hockey career on and off the ice, including many years as an analyst for the Madison Square Garden (MSG) Network and various national hockey broadcast partners in the United States and Canada. On June 2, 2009, The Hockey Hall of Fame announced that Davidson will receive the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for outstanding contributions as a hockey broadcaster and he will be officially inducted on Nov. 9, 2009.
In recent years, his extraordinary abilities as a hockey analyst for MSG were rewarded with four prominent and important honors. The NHL and U.S. Hockey honored Davidson in March of 2004 when he was presented with the Lester Patrick Award for his contribution to American hockey. In May of 2001, he received his second career New York Emmy award for “Outstanding On-Camera Achievement.” He first won the award in April of 1995. In December of 1994, he was an integral part of MSG’s Rangers broadcast team that was named winner of the CableACE award for “Outstanding Live Event Coverage.” In June of 1999, Davidson emceed the on-ice festivities prior to Wayne Gretzky’s final NHL game.
From 1990-93, Davidson served as NBC’s analyst for the NHL All-Star Game. He has worked as the lead analyst for Olympic hockey coverage in the 1992 games in Albertville, France, the 1994 games in Lillehammer, Norway, the 1998 games in Nagano, Japan, the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy.
Davidson contributed to ABC’s coverage of the NHL in 1994 as their top commentator and from 1995-1999 served on the number-one broadcast team with FSN's Mike Emrick for FOX’s coverage of the regular season, All-Star Games, Stanley Cup playoffs and finals. He also worked as an analyst for OLN and NBC during the 2005-06 season.
In addition, Davidson, who was born in Ottawa, Ontario and raised in Calgary, Alberta worked for TBS at the 1990 Goodwill Games, several All-Star Games and Stanley Cup Finals for OLN, NBC, ESPN and SportsChannel, the 1991 Canada Cup for “Hockey Night in Canada”, and the 1996 World Cup of Hockey for FX. He served as ESPN’s studio analyst for the 1993 Stanley Cup playoffs. Davidson also served as a panelist on “After 40 Minutes,” which airs after the second period of “Hockey Night in Canada” telecasts on CBC.
Davidson enjoyed a successful career with the Calgary Centennials in junior hockey and was picked as a first-round draft choice in the 1973 draft by St. Louis. That same year, he became the first goaltender to go directly from junior hockey to the NHL. After two years with the Blues, Davidson was dealt to the Rangers in June of 1975 and led a remarkable run to the Stanley Cup Finals with the club in 1979.
Due to various injuries, Davidson retired in 1983. He went directly to MSG Network for one season, before joining “Hockey Night in Canada,” where he served for two seasons. Davidson rejoined MSG Network for the 1986-87 season and worked alongside play-by-play man Sam Rosen until the 2005-06 season.
John and his wife Diana, are the parents of two daughters: Lindsay and Ashley.
