Hitchcock Named Assistant for Team Canada

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues Head Coach Ken Hitchcock has been named an Assistant Coach for Team Canada for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Hitchcock will join Blues General Manager Doug Armstrong, who returns as Canada’s Associate Director of Player Personnel.

Detroit Head Coach Mike Babcock will return as Head Coach while Dallas Head Coach Lindy Ruff and Boston Head Coach Claude Julien will round out the assistant staff.

Hitchcock has represented Canada at numerous international competitions, including serving as Head Coach at the 2008 World Championships, where he led the team to the Silver Medal. He was also named an Associate Coach at the 2002 (Gold Medal), 2006 and 2010 (Gold Medal) Olympic Games, and at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey (Tournament Champions).

In addition, he served an Assistant Coach at the 2002 World Championships (Gold Medal) and the 1987 World Junior Championships (Gold Medal).

With the Blues, Hitchcock will be entering his third season in 2013-14. After his first two seasons, he has posted the best winning percentage for a Head Coach in franchise history (72-32-13, .671) including 2011-12, when he led the Blues to their second best regular season ever (49-22-11, 109 pts) and their first Central Division Title since 2000. For his efforts, Hitchcock earned the 2012 Jack Adams Award as the National Hockey League’s (NHL) most outstanding coach.

Armstrong returns for his second stint as Canada’s Associate Director of Player Personnel after earning the Gold Medal at the 2010 Winter Games during his first year in that role.

In addition, he served as the General Manager for Team Canada at the 2009 World Championships (Silver Medal), the Assistant General Manager at the 2002 and 2008 World Championships (Silver Medal) and as a special advisor to Steve Yzerman at the 2007 World Championships (Gold Medal).

Armstrong and Yzerman are currently the only two General Managers in the NHL that are members of the “Triple Gold Club,” having been on the management staff for a Stanley Cup, an Olympic Gold Medal and a World Championship Gold Medal.

The 2014 Winter Olympics will begin Feb. 7 in Sochi.
