The Blues have acquired forward Magnus Paajarvi and a second round draft pick in 2014 in exchange for forward David Perron.

The deal was announced shortly after 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

“Magnus is a well-rounded player who has good size and great skating ability,” Blues General Manager Doug Armstrong said. “He is just coming into his own and this will open up more ice time for Jaden (Schwartz) and Vladimir (Tarasenko).”

Paajarvi scored 16 points for the Oilers last season, recording nine goals and seven assists in 42 games. As a rookie, he tallied 15 goals and 19 assists (34 points). He scored a hat trick in his first NHL preseason game in 2010.

"I'm very surprised. I know how it is," Paajarvi said. "I know it's business, but it came as a shock. ... I'm a little bit overwhelmed. All I can say is I had a great time and I can speak good of Edmonton, and coming to St. Louis, it's a new chapter. I'm actually excited to come to a contending team right away. I haven't been in the playoffs yet in three years, so hopefully I can contribute to the team and do what I need to do."

In his 163-game NHL career, Paajarvi has 26 goals and 32 assists.

Paajarvi also participated in the 2010 World Championships in Sweden alongside Blues forward Patrik Berglund.

“Our team is built on balance,” Armstrong said. “We think (Magnus) can come in here and provide an element we don’t have right now. If we were going to make a move, we wanted to add a player that we think fits into our organization where we are today and where we are moving forward.

“We think Magnus is just entering the guts of his career right now. We’re looking forward to him being a Blue.”

Perron spent six years as a member of the Blues and scored 10 goals and 15 assists (25 points) last season. In his 340 game career, he’s registered 84 goals and 114 assists (198 points). He was drafted by the Blues in the first round (26th overall) in 2007.
