O'FALLON, IL - Last week, a group of Blues staff members sorted donations for Operation Homefront.

This week, it was painting and landscaping for the city of O’Fallon, IL.

“If we come out and put just a little bit of effort in, just a few hours worth of work…every little bit helps,” said Chris Kerber, the Blues’ play-by-play broadcaster on KMOX 1120 AM. “If somebody driving down the street doesn’t see clutter and sees that it looks nice, it makes a big difference where you live. It’s the little things, so frankly, it’s easy to do a whole bunch of little things that make up the big picture.”

For nearly four hours on Wednesday, Blues staff assisted the O’Fallon Parks & Recreation maintenance workers around City Hall, where they removed summer plants and replaced them with tulip bulbs for spring. Another group of Blues volunteers painted the town’s outdoor kitchen, which can be rented out for gatherings like picnics, graduation and homecoming parties.

O’Fallon is located 20 minutes east of downtown St. Louis and is home to a large contingent of Blues fans and Season Ticket Holders. According to Mayor Gary Graham, the town's population is around 30,000.

Graham says that while the city has a group of about 150 volunteer workers, it’s rare that an outside organization steps in to help out around town.

“We don’t generally get a group (like this) to come out and help us,” Graham said. “It’s so nice of (the Blues) organization to come out and help us and volunteer. We really appreciate it.”

Giving back isn’t just part of the job for the Blues front office. It’s part of their DNA.

“It’s the most rewarding part of the job, really, just being able to get out and help and do things like this,” said Nate Brown, a graphic designer for the Blues.

Added Kerber, “It doesn’t matter whether the team is playing, whether it’s the offseason, whether it’s in-season or an off-day in between two games, when you get a chance to get out and do things like this, it’s important no matter what time of year or the circumstance.”
