Blues Select 8 Players at 2011 NHL Draft
ST. PAUL – The St. Louis Blues selected eight total players in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in St. Paul, Minnesota, including second round picks, 32nd overall selection Ty Rattie, 41st overall selection Dmitrij Jaskin and 46th overall selection Joel Edmundson. The Blues selected five additional players which included Jordan Binnington (third round, 88th overall), Yannick Veilleux (fourth round, 102nd overall), Niklas Lundstrom (fifth round, 132nd overall), Ryan Tesink (sixth round, 162nd overall) and Teemu Eronen (seventh round, 192nd overall).

Rattie, 18, had 22 points (nine goals, 13 assists) in 16 games and helped Portland make it to the Western Hockey League (WHL) Championship. During the regular season, the 5’11”, 163-pound forward was second on the team with 12 powerplay goals and fourth with 79 points (28 goals, 51 assists), helping the Winterhawks finish atop the Western Conference for the first time since 2001. The Calgary, Alberta native was ranked 17th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

Jaskin, 18, played in 33 games with Slavia Praha in the Czech League this past season, recording 10 points (three goals, seven assists) along with 16 penalty minutes. The 6’1”, 196-pound forward, who is Russian born, moved to the Czech Republic when he was eight months old, competed at the 2011 Under-18 World Championship for the Czech Republic, scoring a team-high four goals in six games. Jaskin was ranked 5th overall among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

Edmundson, 17, played in 71 games with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League (WHL) this past season, recording 20 points (two goals, 18 assists), a plus-three rating and 95 penalty minutes. Competing in his first WHL season, the 6’4”, 191-pound defenseman won the hardest shot competition for Moose Jaw, registering at 98 mph. A native of Brandon, Manitoba, Edmundson was ranked 33rd overall among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

Binnington, 17, was named the Most Outstanding Goaltender of the 2011 Memorial Cup, posting a 1-2 record with a tournament-best goals-against-average of 1.42 and save percentage of .951. He also posted the only shutout of the tournament with 29 saves as part of a 5-0 win over the Kootenay Ice. The 6’1”, 156-pound goaltender was the third goalie to appear in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) championship for Owen Sound; he stole two games for the Attack posting a goals-against-average of 1.94 and a .943 save percentage. Facing elimination in the series, he made 41 saves in game six, including 14 in the third period and 25 saves in the 3-2 game seven overtime win. Binnington had a 27-12-1-4 record in 46 games with one shutout in 2010-11, posting a 3.05 goals-against-average and a .899 save percentage. The Richmond Hill, Ontario native ranked third among North American goaltenders by NHL Central Scouting.

Veilleux, 18, played last season with Shawinigan of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), registering 48 points (19 goals, 29 assists) along with 40 penalty minutes. The 6’2”, 190-pound forward and native of Saint-Hippolyte, Quebec, was ranked 130th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

Lundstrom, 18, a 6’2”, 187-pound goaltender, played last season with Aik Jr., in the Swedish Junior League. He appeared in 22 games, posting one shutout, 3.05 goals against average and .890 save percentage. The Varmdo, Sweden native was ranked eighth overall among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

Tesink, 18, a 5’11”, 157-pound forward, played last season with Saint John of the QMJHL and helped the team capture the Memorial Cup. He led all Saint John rookies in scoring with 35 points (eight goals, 27 assists) in 59 games helping the Sea Dogs tie a league record for most wins in a season with 58 and go undefeated at home in regulation (32-0-1-1). In Game 4 of the QMJHL championship series against Gatineau, he ended the longest game in the history of the President’s Cup Final, connecting 19:16 into the second overtime. The Saint John, New Brunswick native was ranked 47th overall among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

Eronen, 20, a 5’11”, 180-pound defenseman and native of Vantaa, Finland played last season with Jokerit in the Finish Elite League. He recorded 13 points (two goals, 11 assists) along with 24 penalty minutes in 48 games played.
