Tarasenko Claims Gold at World Juniors
Blues prospect Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and an assist in the third period Wednesday to lead Russia to a 5-3 win over Canada in the Gold Medal Game at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championships.

Down 3-0 after two periods, Russia stormed back in the third period with five unanswered goals to defeat Canada and claim their first gold medal since 2003.

Tarasenko, who was drafted by the Blues in the first round (16th overall) in 2010, finished the World Juniors tournament with 4 goals and 7 assists (11 points) in 7 games. He finished second overall in tournament scoring.

Blues prospect Jaden Schwartz, who suffered a broken ankle on Dec. 28, received a silver medal with Team Canada.

Schwartz had one goal and two assists in two tournament appearances. He was drafted by the Blues in the first round (14th overall) in 2010.

The World Junior Championships began Dec. 26 and were held at HSBC Arena in Buffalo. Many of the players, all under age 20, have been drafted by NHL teams.

In addition to Tarasenko and Schwartz, Blues prospect Sebastian Wannstrom (second round, 44th overall in 2010) played for Team Sweden, scoring 2 goals and 3 assists in 6 games. Sweden lost to Team USA in the Bronze Medal game earlier Wednesday.
