Blues Add 5 Prospects on Draft's 2nd Day

LOS ANGELES – The St. Louis Blues selected seven total players in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in Los Angeles, including first round picks, 14th overall selection Jaden Schwartz and 16th overall selection Vladimir Tarasenko on Friday night. The Blues selected five players on the second day which included Sebastian Wannstrom, Max Gardiner, Jani Hakanpaa, Cody Beach, Stephen MacAulay.

Schwartz, 18, played with Tri-City in the United States Hockey League (USHL) this past season. He won the league scoring title with 83 points (33 goals, 50 assists) in 60 games, becoming the youngest player to do so since 1982-83. It was also the highest point total since Thomas Vanek in 2001-02. For his efforts, the Melfort, Saskatchewan native was named to the USHL First All-Star team and the Offensive Player of the Year. The 5-10, 180-pound forward was ranked 28th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

Tarasenko, 18, a native of Yaroslavl, Russia, played this past season with HC Sibir Novosibirsk in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He finished second on the team in scoring with 10 goals and 17 points (10 goals, seven assists) in 28 games played while playing an average of 11:47 per game. The 5-11, 202-pound forward was ranked second among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

Wannstrom, 19, a native of Gavle, Sweden, was selected in the second round, 44th overall. He played in 35 games this past season with Brynas Junior in

Sweden’s Junior Elite League. Wannstrom led the league with 30 goals and 57 points (30 goals, 27 assists) and registered 57 penalty minutes. Wannstrom also

played in 18 games with Brynas of the Swedish Elite League, posting two penalty minutes. The 6-1, 180-pound forward was ranked 27th among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

Gardiner, 18, a native of Edina, Minnesota, was selected in the third round, 74th overall. He played this past season with Minnetonka High School in Minnesota, finishing second on the team with 43 points (17 goals, 26 assists). In his senior season, and second year as a captain, he helped lead the team to a Section 6AA Championship and the final game of the state tournament. Gardiner, who has committed to playing at the University of Minnesota, was one of 10 finalists for the Mr. Hockey Award which is given to the most outstanding senior high school hockey player in the state of Minnesota. The 6-3, 176-pound forward was ranked 49th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

Hakanpaa, 18, a native of Kirkkonummi, Finland, was selected in the fourth round, 104th overall. He played last season with K-Vantaa in Finland’s Junior League, registering 14 points (two goals, 12 assists) and 49 penalty minutes. The 6-4, 211-pound defenseman was ranked 55th among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

Beach, 17, a native of Kelowna, British Columbia, was selected in the fifth round, 134th overall. He played last season with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League (WHL), recording 14 points (three goals, 11 assists) and a team-high 157 penalty minutes.

MacAulay, 18, a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, was selected in the sixth round, 164th overall. spent last season with Saint John in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), registering 21 points (eight goals, 13 assists) along with 39 penalty minutes. The 6-1, 175-pound forward was ranked 85th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.
