LOS ANGELES - The St. Louis Blues selected forwards Jaden Schwartz (14th overall) and Vladimir Tarasenko (16th overall) on the first day of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft at Staples Center.

The club acquired Ottawa's 16th overall pick via trade, sending defensive prospect David Runblad to the Senators.

Schwartz, 18, played with Tri-City in the United States Hockey League (USHL) this past season. He won the league scoring title with 83 points (33 goals, 50 assists) in 60 games, becoming the youngest player to do so since 1982-83. It was also the highest point total since Thomas Vanek in 2001-02. For his efforts, the Melfort, Saskatchewan native was named to the USHL First All-Star team and the Offensive Player of the Year.

Schwartz has committed to playing at Colorado College for next season, joining his older brother, Rylan. Prior to joining Tri-City, he played with Notre Dame, a private school in Wilcox, Saskatchewan that has produced players such as Vincent Lecavalier, Rod Brind'Amour, Curtis Joseph and Wendel Clark. In 2007-08, Schwartz led the Midget AAA league and broke the scoring record held by Lecavalier and Brad Richards with 39 goals and 111 points (39 goals, 72 assists) in 44 games.

The 5-10, 180-pound forward was ranked 28th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

Tarasenko, 18, a native of Yaroslavl, Russia, played this past season with HC Sibir Novosibirsk in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He finished second on the team in scoring with 10 goals and 17 points (10 goals, seven assists) in 28 games played while playing an average of 11:47 per game.

On the international level, Tarasenko represented Russia at the 2010 World Junior Championships, tying for the team lead in goals (four) and finished third overall in points (five). He also played for Russia at the 2009 Under-18 World Championships, winning a silver medal after finishing second overall in scoring with 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) and was named to the tournament all-star team.

Tarasenko's father, Andrei, also the coach for HC Sibir, was a forward for 21 seasons in Russia. He led the Russian Hockey League in scoring with 60 points in 46 games in 1996-97, and represented Russia at the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, scoring two goals in eight games.

The 5-11, 202-pound forward was ranked second among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting.
