Sports legends often have their place in history: in the record books, in the various Hall of Fames and in the memories of the fans they once captivated.

But starting Tuesday, St. Louis sports legends have yet another spot…and this one is a little closer to home.

The St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame unveiled an exhibit Tuesday on the Scottrade Center concourse that showcases some of the best athletes ever to play in the St. Louis area. Inaugural inductees include Bernie Federko, Stan Musial, Ozzie Smith, Jack Buck, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Ed Macauley and Roger Wehrli, to name a few.

“Over the years, countless St. Louis athletes have been honored in a Hall of Fame across sports and cities. St. Louis boasts some of the greatest names and honor in all of sport and finally our award-winning and record-setting athletes are being honored under one roof,” said Greg Marecek, the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame founder and president. “It’s only fitting that these exhibits be housed at Scottrade Center, a premier location for sports and entertainment that is accessible to fans year round.”

The exhibit can be viewed by all event-goers and has been built outside Section 103. Each year, the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame expects to expand to various locations throughout the plaza level concourse and will include sports memorabilia and awards from the Blues, Rams, Cardinals, Browns and Hawks. Also included are individual sports such as bowling, tennis, auto racing and collegiate sports.

“I owe my career and everything I have to St. Louis,” said inaugural inductee Bernie Federko, who also is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Federko played in 1,000 career NHL games, scoring 369 goals and 761 assists for 1,130 points.

“Thanks to St. Louis and those that came to support us and gave me an opportunity to do what I do best. I’ll forever be indebted to city St. Louis and being part of the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame is really special.”

St. Louis Hawks basketball legend Ed Macauley and NFL Hall of Famer Roger Wehrli attended Tuesday’s unveiling.

The memorabilia included in the display includes a St. Louis Rams Super Bowl XXXIV trophy from 2000, a Gold Glove Award from Ozzie Smith, a 1975 stolen base from Lou Brock and an NBA championship ring from Macauley.

The exhibit was made possible through sponsorships from Anheuser-Busch InBev and Don Brown Chevrolet.

“We try to make a contribution to this great town that we all live in,” said Peter McLoughlin, CEO of St. Louis Blues Enterprises. “We have made a lot of improvements to Scottrade Center over the past several years, but the most recent is one of our most significant, and that’s this beautiful Hall of Fame behind me.

“(Scottrade Center) is a great building, and this Hall of Fame makes it even more special. We’re pleased to be a part of it.”

Starting with the March 16 game vs. Colorado, fans can see the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame exhibit outside Section 103. For more information, go to www.stlouissportshalloffame.com.
