ST. LOUIS (AP) -- St. Louis Blues President John Davidson was honored in a pregame ceremony prior to the Blues' game Saturday against the San Jose Sharks.

Davidson, currently in his fourth season as team president, was honored last Monday at the NHL Hall of Fame induction ceremony with the Foster Hewitt Award.

The honor, recognized by the NHL Hall of Fame, was given to Davidson for his two-plus decades of excellence behind the microphone for various national television partners as well as for his dedication to the game and the NHL.

Davidson, who was a former goaltender for the Blues and the team's first round draft choice in 1973, spend 18 years of his broadcasting career for the MSG Network as an analyst alongside of New York Rangers play-by-play man Sam Rosen. Davidson was presented with the Lester Patrick Award in 2004 by the NHL and U.S. Hockey for his contribution to American hockey.

Davidson became the seventh president in franchise history on June 30, 2006.

"It all started for me here as a player in 1973 and now I stand here in 2009 and I can't tell you how humbled I am," Davidson said. "To be in the broadcasting wing, and I'd still like to say that over the years, I've met many, many wonderful people in all aspects that have helped me along the way."

Under Davidson's guidance, the Blues have ascended in the standings and made the playoffs a season ago after being last in the league. The team went from 21-46-15 in 2006-07 to 41-31-10 a season ago that included 25-9-7 in the second half of the season which put the Blues in the playoffs in the Western Conference as the No. 6 seed.

Davidson also emceed the on-ice festivities prior to Wayne Gretzky's final NHL game. He also has been the lead analyst for multiple All-Star Games, the Winter Olympics and Stanley Cup Finals.

"To me, hockey is the greatest game in the world," Davidson said. "I am very honored."

Among those that left video tributes in honor of Davidson include Dave Maloney, teammate with the Rangers and MSG broadcaster, NBC Today's Matt Lauer, current MSG color analyst Joe Micheletti and Bob Cole, play-by-play announcer for Hockey Night in Canada.
