Cam Janssen's first goal as a member of the Blues was followed by a unique goal celebration. Janssen's goal helped the Blues to a 5-2 win Thursday over Colorado.
As his team’s designated tough guy, Cam Janssen dishes out a few hits and throws a few punches on a regular basis.

Score goals?

Not that often, but when opportunity presents itself…

“Hey, the puck was loose. It was right there,” Janssen said Thursday night, almost defending himself to a group of reporters who were joking about a newfound natural goal scorer. “I just tapped it home. It wasn’t pretty by any means, but it was pretty to me. I’ll take it.”

Janssen’s goal, his first as a member of the Blues and second of his NHL career, came 9:36 into the second period to lift the Blues to a 2-0 advantage over the Avalanche at Scottrade Center. The Blues never trailed in the game and came away with a convincing 5-2 win.

“It was a big goal for us,” said Blues forward T.J. Oshie, who scored a goal and two assists in the game. “I was standing next to (Cam) before we went out and he said he was going to get one. He held true to his word.”

Janssen grew up in nearby Eureka, a town just 30 miles west of downtown St. Louis. As a kid, he remembers his idols wearing a Blues jersey with pride; Brett Hull, Tony Twist, Kelly Chase, Brendan Shanahan, Ian Laperierre…the list goes on and on.

Years later, the hometown kid scored a goal for the hometown team. It’s a story that’s almost too good to be true.

“It feels great,” Janssen said. “It’s been a long time. I forgot what it felt like. It’s always good to have a good (fight) or a couple of good hits, but to get a goal, it’s just something else. No matter how it goes in, it’s nice to be able to get one.”

It even earned a compliment from Andy Murray on the bench.

“I don’t get excited about too many goals, and it wasn’t just because Cam scored,” Murray said after the game. “It was the way we scored it. A gritty forecheck, (Trent) Whitfield finishes his (check), Dan Hinote protects the puck, Cam comes in at the right time and finishes it. I think I yelled ‘great goal’ on the bench. I don’t say that very often.

“It was a coach’s kind of goal.”

Janssen said he came home to a house full of family and friends, where he celebrated the goal for an hour before he had to go to bed and get ready for practice the next morning. But the memory still lasts.

“Anytime you get a chance to score, it’s always a bonus being in my position,” he said. “We’re working hard, I like my linemates.

“Maybe I’ll get another one.”
