Pietrangelo, Sonne to Junior Championships
ST. LOUIS – Hockey Canada and the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) announced today that Blues prospects Alex Pietrangelo and Brett Sonne were named to Canada’s National Junior Championship Team. The squad will participate at the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-20 Championship, commonly referred to as the World Junior Championship, in Ottawa, Ontario, Dec. 26, 2008-Jan. 5, 2009. The 10-team World Junior Championship annually showcases the world’s best hockey players under the age of 20.

“We are excited for Alex and Brett to be named to Team Canada as this will be a highly skilled tournament in Ottawa,” said Blues President John Davidson. “This is the next step for Alex to compete with players his age and we anticipate watching him. Brett is a hardworking skilled forward who is one of the Canadian Hockey League’s leading scorers and he has had an outstanding camp for Team Canada. Our fans can see the next wave of exciting young players as we also look forward to watching prosects Ian Cole, Cade Fairchild, Simon Hjarmarlsson and Aaron Palushaj represent their countries as well at this great tournament.”

Pietrangelo, 18, was drafted by the Blues in the first round, fourth overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. A native of King City, Ontario, Pietrangelo has skated in eight games for the Blues this season, registering one assist along with two penalty minutes. The 6-2, 199-pound defenseman has also played in nine games with the Niagara Ice Dogs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), recording 15 points (five goals, 10 assists) along with four penalty minutes. He finished last season ranked seventh among all OHL defensemen in scoring with 53 points (13 goals, 40 assists) while with the Ice Dogs and participated in the 2008 OHL All-Star Classic and the 2008 CHL Top Prospects Game.

Sonne, 19, was drafted by the Blues in the third round, 85th overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. A native of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Sonne has played in 34 games this season with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League (WHL), and leads the league with 55 points (23 goals, 32 assists) which also ranks second in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). In five seasons with the Hitmen, the 5-11, 190-pound center has amassed 126 points (64 goals, 62 assists) in 204 games played.

Cole, Fairchild and Palushaj will represent the United States in the tournament, while Hjarmarlsson will represent Sweden.
