Blues Prospects Prepare for World Juniors
ST. LOUIS - USA Hockey announced Wednesday that Blues prospects Ian Cole, Cade Fairchild and Aaron Palushaj will join the 22-player roster for its 2009 U.S. National Junior Team. The squad will participate at the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-20 Championship, commonly referred to as the World Junior Championship, in Ottawa, Ontario, Dec. 26, 2008-Jan. 5, 2009. The 10-team World Junior Championship annually showcases the world’s best hockey players under the age of 20.

In addition, Hockey Canada and the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) announced on Wednesday that Blues prospects Jake Allen, Alex Pietrangelo and Brett Sonne were among 38 players of Canada’s best junior-aged hockey players (born in 1989 or later) to be invited to take part in Canada’s National Junior Selection Camp from December 11-15, 2008 in Ottawa, ON at the SBP Arena and the Robert-Guertin Arena.

Cole, 19, was selected in the first round, 18th overall by the Blues in the 2007 Entry Draft. A sophomore at the University of Notre Dame, the Ann Arbor, Michigan native has played in 15 games, registering eight points (three goals, five assists) and 20 penalty minutes. The 6-1, 217-pound defenseman guided Team USA to the silver medal at the 2007 Under-18 World Championships in Finland, scoring five points (four goals, one assist) in seven games played.

Fairchild, 19, was selected in the fourth round, 96th overall by the Blues in the 2007 Entry Draft. The Duluth, Minnesota native is currently in his sophomore season at the University of Minnesota. Fairchild has played in 14 games and has 12 points (two goals, 10 assists assists) and 28 penalty minutes. The 5-11, 186-pound blueliner represented Team USA at the 2007 Under-18 World Championships in Finland, recording seven points (one goal, six assists).

Palushaj, 19, was selected in the second round, 44th overall by the Blues in the 2007 Entry Draft. The Northville, Minnesota native is currently in his sophomore season at the University of Michigan and leads the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) with 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists).

Allen, 18, was drafted by the Blues in the second round, 34th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. A native of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Allen has played in 22 games this season with the Montreal Juniors of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), posting a 13-8-1 record, two shutouts, a .923 save percentage and a 2.82 goals against average. Allen led Team Canada to a gold medal at the 2008 Under-18 IIHF World Championship leading all goaltenders with a .948 save percentage, a 1.43 goals-against average and two shutouts in seven games played. The 6-2, 177-pound netminder was named the best goaltender of the tournament, while being named to the tournament All-Star team. Last season with St. John’s, he finished second among all QMJHL rookie goaltenders with a .901 save-percentage.

Pietrangelo, 18, was drafted by the Blues in the first round, fourth overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. A native of King City, Ontario, Pietrangelo has skated in eight games for the Blues this season, registering one assist along with two penalty minutes. The 6-2, 199-pound defenseman has also played in seven games with the Niagara Ice Dogs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), recording 13 points (five goals, eight assists) along with four penalty minutes.

He finished last season ranked seventh among all OHL defensemen in scoring with 53 points (13 goals, 40 assists) while with the Ice Dogs and participated in the 2008 OHL All-Star Classic and the 2008 CHL Top Prospects Game.

Sonne, 19, was drafted by the Blues in the third round, 85th overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. A native of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Sonne has played in 29 games this season with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League (WHL), and is tied for first in the league with 43 points (15 goals, 28 assists). In five seasons with the Hitmen, the 5-11, 190-pound center has amassed 114 points (56 goals, 48 assists) in 199 games played.
