ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Blues and the National Hockey League announced today the 2008-09 regular season schedule.

The Blues have created a more fan friendly schedule for the upcoming season that consists of 24, Friday, Saturday and Sunday games compared to only 21 last season. Twenty of the 24 weekend games are either on Friday or Saturday nights compared to the 15 that were on last year’s slate. St. Louis will play 14 Saturday games and will play nine home games in the final two months of this season, compared to only six in the last two months of last season.

“We worked hard with the league to give our fans the best possible schedule this season,” said CEO of St. Louis Blues Enterprises, Peter McLoughlin. “The combination of added weekend dates with visits from teams such as the Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens that have not visited us in some time give us a schedule that we think the fans will embrace.”

“This schedule has many benefits for us not only for the fans but as a hockey club as well,” said Blues President John Davidson. “We play eight of our first 10 games on home ice and have eight home games late in the season in the month of March. Our travel schedule is also much better than last season as we are spending less time away from St. Louis.”

Four of the five Atlantic Division teams will visit the Scottrade Center this season. Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins come to town on November 1 followed by Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils on December 30. The Eastern Conference finalist Philadelphia Flyers make a visit to the Scottrade Center on January 31 and Markus Naslund and the New York Rangers come to St. Louis on February 16 for a President’s Day showdown.

The Blues will also host the Montreal Canadiens on November 16.

The Blues three “at large” games are against the Boston Bruins, Carolina Hurricanes and Florida Panthers where the Blues will play a home-and-home set against each club.

With the NHL’s new scheduling format, St. Louis will play six games against each of its four fellow members of the Central Division in the Western Conference: Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, and Nashville Predators.

The Blues will play four games against each of its remaining Western Conference opponents.

Among the other highlights on the 2008-09 schedule:
  • The Blues will play eight of their first 10 games on home ice which includes a season-long seven-game homestand.
  • The Blues will play every Eastern Conference opponent at least once this season, and will play Boston, Carolina and Florida two times.
  • St. Louis will play nine home games in the month of December, representing the most home games in any month.
