Blues Select 10 at 2008 NHL Draft
OTTAWA – The St. Louis Blues selected 10 total players in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft in Ottawa, including first round pick, 4th overall selection, defenseman Alex Pietrangelo on Friday night. The Blues selected nine players on the second day which included, CBC product Philip McRae, Jake Allen, Jori Lehtera, James Livingston, Ian Schultz, David Warsofsky, Kristoffer Berglund, Anthony Nigro and Paul Karpowich.

Pietrangelo, 18, a native of King City, Ontario, finished last season seventh among all OHL defensemen in scoring with 53 points (13 goals, 40 assists), playing for the Niagara Ice Dogs. He participated in the 2008 OHL All-Star Classic and the 2008 CHL Top Prospects Game. He played his first OHL season with the Mississauga Ice Dogs of the OHL, collecting 52 points (seven goals, 45 assists) in 59 games played.

Pietrangelo represented Team Canada at the 2007 Ivan Hlinka Under-18 hockey tournament in the Czech Republic. The 6-3, 211-pound defenseman was ranked 6th among all North American Skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

The Blues selected CBC product Philip McRae with the 33rd overall pick in the draft. The 6-2, 189-pound center played for the London Knights of the OHL last season, finishing fifth on the team with 46 points (18 goals, 28 assists) in 66 games. His father Basil played for St. Louis for four seasons, 1992-1996.

With the 34th overall pick, St. Louis selected goaltender Jake Allen from St. John’s of the QMJHL. He Led Team Canada to a gold medal at the 2008 Under-18 IIHF World Championship leading all goaltenders with a .948 save percentage, a 1.43 goals-against average and two shutouts in seven games played. The 6-2, 189-pound netminder was named the best goaltender of the tournament, while being named to the tournament All-Star team.

This past season with St. John’s, he finished second among all QMJHL rookie goaltenders with a .901 save-percentage. The Fredericton, New Brunswick native recorded a 9-8-4 record for the Fog Devils.

The Blues selected three players in the third round, which included center, Jori Lehtera, and right wingers, James Livingston and Ian Schultz
Lehtera was the 65th pick overall and played in 54 games for Tappara of the Finnish Elite League, collecting 42 points (13 goals, 29 assists) along with 32 penalty minutes. The 6-2, 191-pounder was ranked 23rd among all European skaters in this year’s draft.

Livingston was selected 70th overall by the Blues and appeared in 68 games for Sault Ste. Marie of the OHL. The 6-1, 200-pounder collected 44 points (21 goals, 23 assists) along with 135 penalty minutes. The Halifax, Nova Scotia native was ranked 53rd among all North American skaters.

Schultz, played for Calgary of the WHL last season, notching 30 points (15 goals, 15 assists) along with 128 penalty minutes in 67 games played. The 6-1, 179-pound forward was selected 87th overall, and was ranked 94th among all North American skaters.

With their lone fourth round pick, the Blues selected defenseman David Warsofsky from the U-18 USA Development Team. The 5-8, 160-pound blueliner tallied 32 points (nine goals, 23 assists) in 48 games last season. The Weymouth, Massachusetts native was ranked 81st among all North American skaters.

The Blues selected defenseman Kristoffer Berglund with their fifth round pick, 125th overall. The 5-10, 180-pound native of Umea Sweden skated in 42 games for Bjorkloven of the Swedish-2 League, notching 25 points (four goals, 21 assists) in 42 games played.

St. Louis nabbed center Anthony Nigro with their ninth selection of the day, sixth round, 155th overall. The 6-0, 189-pound forward played for Guelph of the OHL last season, notching 48 points (24 goals, 24 assists) in 67 games played.

The Blues landed goaltender Paul Karpowich with their 10th and final selection of the day, seventh round, 185th overall. The 6-1, 171-pound netminder played for Wellington of the OPJHL last season.
