ST. LOUIS - If you thought T.J. Oshie’s fame and celebrity would end when the Winter Olympics wrapped up in Sochi, think again.
After being featured in Sports Illustrated and on NBC’s Today Show, EXTRA and The Golf Channel, Oshie tried a new one Wednesday: a national TV commercial for Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
The commercial, which will begin airing during the Stanley Cup Playoffs on NBC and NBC Sports Network, features Oshie as he practices his shot on an empty net. He stops to call Enterprise for a car, and when the Enterprise employee shows up with the keys, Oshie asks him to stick around and stand in the net for a bit.
“When you come to Enterprise, we’re known for a high level of customer service, so we put together this spot,” said Pat Farrell, Enterprise’s Chief Marketing Officer. “Like the voiceover says, we’ll do anything for our customers, and like T.J., we’re committed to doing something excellent.”
The commercial shoot was held at the Blues practice facility, where the production crew began setting up at 9 a.m.
“I didn’t really know what to think or how big of a deal it would be, so when I heard, I was really excited and happy to do it,” Oshie said in between takes Wednesday. “There’s a lot of work that goes into it. A lot of these guys are doing a really good job with great attention to detail. It’s really cool to be a part of. They’re making everything really easy on me and it’s been fun.”
Farrell attended the US / Russia game in Sochi when Oshie scored four goals on six shootout attempts. The idea for this commercial came shortly after Farrell witnessed Oshie’s heroics.
“I attended the Olympics with a contingent of Americans in a stadium of 11,000 Russians, and I watched T.J. Oshie silence them,” Farrell said. “It was probably the most remarkable individual athletic event I’ve ever seen. When you were there, and you’re looking at it, you’re nervous. You’re in the stands and you’re so nervous for him and what he’s got to do. He was as calm as he could be. To be that good at something means you’ve probably worked at it a long time.”
Since that epic shootout, Oshie has been invited to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and also received invites to appear on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel and CNN's Piers Morgan, to name a few. In addition, his No. 74 jersey is second in NHL jersey sales only to Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby.
Oshie said he never expected the shootout to lead to this.
“Afterwards, when I did a bunch of interviews with some pretty well-known people, even then I thought it was going to blow over, and then we’d go on to the next game and that was that,” he said. “It’s been awesome and it’s been a good experience for me. It’s really great and comforting to see all the support that people have shown for not only me, but my teammates over there in Sochi and everyone here in St. Louis.
“It’s been really cool and I’m really enjoying the ride.”
