Getting Punk'd

Battle of the Blades with Kelly Chase
Getting Punk\'d
The first day of orientation camp was busy.

We went out on the ice for about 20 minutes and skated around in our hockey skates. Then we were given these figure skates that they had us fitted for. And let me tell you, the figure skates were ridiculous. They are so different than hockey skates. They have these huge toe-picks on them that is probably going to get somebody hurt.

And we can’t even begin to keep up with the girls we’re skating with. They’re such great athletes it’s almost sickening. They give a whole new definition to world class. They’re leading you around the ice the whole time and trying to keep up. This will be stressful, because they’re so good at what they do and I have so much work to do to be able to skate like that.

After trying out our figure skates, they took us on a rock-star-like bus to this unmarked recreation center. With cameras following our every move we walked inside and met one of the greatest ballet dancers in the world.

My jaw dropped when I realized what was happening and I turned to Russ Courtnall and said “No freaking way am I going to do ballet.”

But with our instructor and four-time Canadian national figure skating champion Kurt Browning there, I had no choice if I wanted to succeed at this show.

So there we were. They got us into the first position of ballet. They told us to get our feet out at 3-o’clock and 9-o’clock. So we try it, and all of a sudden, we start having to bend our knees and get our arms in the air like ballerinas.

It was at this point I turned to Browning and said if we’re getting punk’d, I’m gonna give you a beating.

He bursts out laughing and sure enough, that’s exactly what was happening. They had six cameras filming us making fools of ourselves. Here we were doing these ballerina squats. I was looking in the mirror and I just started laughing.

I grew up on a farm. All of my uncles are farmers and cowboys. If they could have seen me right then, there is no way they’d let me back on the farm. It was pretty funny.

They got us good. But at least now, I know I can bend in ways I never thought possible.
