Late Goal Lifts East to 8-7 Win
ATLANTA -- Late goals by Eric Staal and Marc Savard held off a strong third-period rally as the Eastern Conference escaped the 2008 NHL All-Star Game with an

Manny Legace's third period performance kept the West in the game, but Marc Savard's goal with 20 seconds left was the game breaker. Legace stopped 6 of 9 shots in the period.
 
8-6 victory over the Western Conference at Philips Arena Sunday.

The late goals from the two Eastern All-Stars blunted an exceptional effort from the Columbus Blue Jackets’ Rick Nash, who had a hat trick in the losing effort. Nash electrified the crowd with two breakaway goals.

It’s tough to find someone in hockey who will be more up front and honest than Manny Legace. What was it like to face Eric Staal, Scott Gomez, Evgeni Malkin and Kimmo Timonen in an elimination shootout in the
[ WATCH ] Dodge/SuperSkills Competition?

“I was just trying not to pull a groin out there,” Legace told Versus reporter Chris Simpson.

Legace gave up just one goal to Timonen in the shootout, but stopped everyone else to help the Western Conference to a win in the elimination shootout round.

He also stole the show with his performance in the
[ WATCH ] YoungStars Game, giving up just one goal in the 3-on-3 tournament. He also got an assist on a Patrick Kane goal, while David Perron and Erik Johnson each had a goal in the rookies showcase. ...complete results

Legace Ready for All-Star Weekend

When Manny Legace skates in the 2008 NHL All-Star game on Sunday, he’ll be in pretty good company.

The Blues goaltender has arranged for more than 15 friends and family members to attend the game at Philips Arena in Atlanta this weekend. His wife, two kids, parents, siblings…you name it and they’ll be there.

"About 15 (tickets) right now," Legace said last week with a grin. "And counting." ...more

Manny Legace received an invitation to the first All-Star game of his career on Jan. 10 and was more than happy to accept. Legace has put together a great season for the Blues, helping keep the team in the hunt for their first playoff berth since the 2003-04 season. "You're with the greatest players in the world on a great stage," Legace said recently about attending his first NHL All-Star Game. "I'm just going to try and soak it in (because) you never know if you're going to go back." ...more

After being selected first overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, being selected into the NHL YoungStars Game shouldn't come as much of a surprise for Erik Johnson, but it did. "You just kind of figure, hey, maybe I'll get a shot at it," Johnson said. "It's a nice honor to have, and it'll be a good learning experience for the future." Johnson has 3 goals and 13 assists in 34 games played this season. He is tied for 13th among rookies with 16 points.

While Erik Johnson was being selected No. 1 in 2006, all 30 teams took a pass on Perron. Seven rounds later, Perron still was left unchosen. Teams took note after a season in the Quebec Junior League, where Perron potted 39 goals and 44 assists in 70 games. His leadership and production helped his team to the league championship.  "Nobody would even think I'd be close to making the (Blues)," Perron said about the start of the season. "In my mind, I wanted to go to the (YoungStars) game. I ended up going, so it's nice to go and I'm going to have fun there."

Manny Legace will make his first career appearance in an NHL All-Star Game on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 5 p.m. Legace will play one period for the Western Conference All-Stars and will join Detroit's Chris Osgood and San Jose's Evgeni Nabokov in net. ...more

Manny Legace will participate in the 2008 Dodge/SuperSkills competition on Saturday night, which will include the league's best players competing in a fastest skater competition, an obstacle course relay, accuracy shooting, breakaway challenge and more. Is Legace ready to face the likes of Alex Ovechkin, Martin St. Louis and Ilya Kovalchuk in a shootout? "No," he told stlouisblues.com. "Hopefully they miss the net every time." ...more

Erik Johnson and David Perron will compete in the 2008 YoungStars Game, which will be played in the middle of the Skills Competition. The YoungStars Game features two 6-minute periods of 3-on-3 hockey. Blues goaltender Manny Legace is expected to participate in goal for the YoungStars game.
